Essential oils can be used in different ways, depending on your tastes and needs.
Massage
Pure essential oils can be added to a carrier or neutral oil and used for massage. The e most common carrier oils are sunflower oil and peanut oil. This is because they are cheap and readily available. For a more luxurious feel, and better absorption use almond oil. Wheat germ oil, which is rich in vitamin E, makes a good carrier if you are treating skin complaints.
Massage doesn’t just need to be about a back rub though; it is one of the best ways to treat a migraine. Add two drops of lavender essential oil and two drops of peppermint essential oil to a small dropper bottle of wheat germ oil. When you feel a migraine coming on rub a few drops of your mixture into each temple for relief.
Candles
Essential oil aromatherapy is often associated with candles. Always try to buy or make soy candles as they have many benefits over paraffin candles. They burn much more cleanly, release no carcinogens, burn at a lower temperature (and so don’t destroy the essential oil) and burn more slowly.
You can add your favourite oil blend to the candles when you make them or you can drop a few drops of oil onto the melted wax that forms as they burn. Don’t drop the oil on the candle as it will burn.
Don’t leave candles unattended, or leave them burning in a bedroom.
Direct use
Essential oils can be used directly where needed. For example to aid sleep drop a few drops of lavender essential oil and blue chamomile essential oil onto your pillow.
Diffusers
The most common way to use essential oils is in some form of commercial diffuser, but a commercial one isn’t necessary. Put some oil on a tissue and gently rub it on a light bulb. When you turn on the light the scent will naturally permeate the room.
Bath time
Add a few drops of oil directly to the bath, or make bath scented bath oils if you have dry skin. Scented bath salts are easy to make and make attractive gifts.
If you make cosmetics, soaps etc then you can scent them with your oils.
