August 13th, 2008 -- Posted in soy candles | No Comments »

One of the best ways of creating a home environment that is uplifting and relaxing is with aromatherapy soy candles. You also get a great smelling home along with all the health benefits these candles can bring. Here’s a look at a few things you should know about aromatherapy soy candles.

What Is An Aromatherapy Soy Candle?

An aromatherapy candle made of soy is also made with essential oils inside of it. As the candle burns, the oils are heated spread throughout the air.

These soy candles are available in all types of shapes and sizes, as well as filled with a variety of different essential oils.

How Do Aromatherapy Soy Candles Work?

Basically, as the candle burns, the oil gets hot and releases its scent throughout the room. The therapeutic vapors can help in elevating mood or becoming much more alert. They can also reduce stress levels and even improve your memory.

In order to get the benefits provided by essential oils you will need to be sure you are buying a true aromatherapy soy candle and not one that merely smells good. Yes, a regular candle can make your room smell nicer, but only the aromatic essential oils can give you the health benefits.

Common Aromatherapy Soy Candle Scents

A few of the most common therapeutic scents of these wonderful candles include:

Lavender - Great in helping release tension

Chamomile - Helps in eliminating tension

Ginger - Know to increase memory

Bergamot - Excellent at making you feel happy

This is only a small example of the many therapeutic benefits of aromatherapy. Regardless of what type of scent you want, an aromatherapy soy candle can be your perfect solution.

Essential oils in Aromatherapy Soy Candles

August 10th, 2008 -- Posted in essential oil | No Comments »

Most soy candle kits that you can buy provide fragrance oil, this is not essential oil. To get the best out of the aromatherapy properties of your soy candles you need to use essential oils. The best thing about using them is that you can personal the fragrance. You also need to use less, about 30 to 60 drops per 8 ounce candle instead of half an ounce of the provided oil.

You get to pick exactly what aromatherapy fragrance you want in the soy candle, and get to make your own blends to suit what you want to use them for.

There are two ways of using pure essential oils with soy candles. You can take an unscented candle and light it and add a few drops of your chosen oil to the melted wax that forms on the surface. this works well with container candles, such as tea lights. make sure you don’t drop the oil on the wick though, as its highly inflammable. This is best for fragrances you don’t use often.

The second way is to mix your chosen blend into the candle wax when you make it. Add between thirty and sixty drops to an eight ounce candle, depending on how strong you want it to smell.

Here’s one my favorite stress busting blends, use it in massage oil, or add it to your candles when you feel stressed and irritable.

  • 7 drops neroli
  • 3 drops lavender
  • 20 drops lemon

How to make a Soy Candle

August 10th, 2008 -- Posted in soy candles | No Comments »

I thought I should post some easy to follow basic directions on how to make a basic candle. I’ll post more details about the ingredients and such as we go along. This is a very basic candle. If you want to perfume it you will need about an ounce of pure oil for each sixteen ounces of wax.

You need:

1 container for your candle, try something simple the first time, like a glass jar.

Enough soy wax flakes to fill the container

Fragrance oil

1 Wick

Pyrex jug, or other microwave safe jug

Superglue

Spoon

Scissors

·        Measure the soy flakes by pouring them into the container you wish to make the candle in, and transfer them to the microwave jug,

·        Melt the wax in a microwave (about five minutes for sixteen ounces)

·        The container may need a quick stir, and be careful it will be hot

·        Wash and dry your container carefully

·        Stick the bottom of the wick to the bottom of the jar with a dab of superglue (or buy proper tabs)

·        Add fragrance oil to the melted wax and stir in. Make sure the wax is clear not cloudy.

·        Pour the wax slowly into the jar. (Some people prefer to warm glass jars slightly in the oven before pouring to reduce the risk of cracking but I find a slow pour does the trick.) Make sure the top end of the wick stays outside the jar!

·        Pull the wick tight through the candle and then around a pencil or spoon. Put the pencil or spoon over the jar to keep the wick in position.

·        Leave to cool and set.

·        After the candle has cooled you can trim the wick.

·        If the candle is mottled at the top you can get rid of that by carefully remelting the very top of the candle (with a heat gun or hairdryer) and allowing it to reset.

Your very first candle!

The Advantages of Soy Candles

August 7th, 2008 -- Posted in soy candles | No Comments »

Making soy candles is an interesting an inexpensive hobby. Homemade candles can be made for many purposes, from simple mood lighting to ornaments to aromatherapy tools.

A mould for soy candles can be made from any heat resistant container of a suitable size and shape or you can make your own moulds from cardboard.

Wicks can be bought from craft shops, or you can make your own. Dangle the wick from a pencil over the mould and the carefully pour the melted wax into the mould, trying to leave the wick straight. Adding a small weight to the base of the wick, or sticking it to the base of the mould can achieve this. Once the candles are cooled they can be left in their moulds or removed from them. Remember to follow safety precautions when making candles, as the wax is very hot.

It is better for the environment and for you to use a soy base to make candles. Soy candles are ecologically much more friendly than the traditional paraffin wax based ones. They are greener to make, and leave a smaller carbon footprint when used. They burn at a slower rate than paraffin candles and last longer, and they have less scent of their own, meaning that you get more advantage from aromatherapy oils that you add to your homemade candles. Soy homemade candles won’t fill your home with the toxic by-products of paraffin wax ones. Some of these by-products are carcinogenic, and others have been implicated in respiratory diseases.

The lower burning temperature of soy-based candles makes them a better vehicle for scents than paraffin candles for aromatherapy oils. Instead of the scent of the essential oil being corrupted by the smell of the wax it can be enjoyed in its pure form.

The traditional alternative to paraffin based homemade candles is beeswax but this can be come very expensive. Soy based wax is the new environmentally friendly alternative to beeswax. If you want beeswax candles it is better to make them at home, or check the source carefully. Labelling regulations mean that candles can be sold as beeswax candles even if they only have a small percentage of beeswax and the rest is paraffin wax.

By making sure your candles are made with vegetable dyes and ecologically sound wicks then you can reduce the environmental impact even further. Once you have mastered the basic techniques of making candles then it is possible to get very creative with them. Any colour or perfume can be added to them, and they can be made in any shape that you can get a heat resistant mould for. Homemade candles are a lovely way to use aromatherapy in your home, and make popular gifts, which you can personalise with aroma and colour for every one you know.

Once your skill levels are high enough homemade candles can form the basis of a good home-based business. Many websites give details of how to make the candles and where to obtain supplies. Of course you could just buy soy candles instead of making them, and many Internet sites are available for you to do just that.
